After graduating from the University of Maine in Orono, Rick Hautala spent most of his life in southern Maine (much with author Holly Newstein). After 1980 he published over 30 novels and story collections (he also wrote under the name A.J. Matthews). In 2012 he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Horror Writers Association.
